The developing concern for healthy living over the last decade has prompted new studies in food and beverage analysis. Analytical laboratories have been used with increasing frequency throughout the winemaking process to ensure the authenticity of the wine. An area of enology currently lacking in scientific research is metal content analysis. Heavy metal presence in wine has the potential to cause adverse medical effects. Wine samples from wine growing regions in the United States will be compared against standards of heavy metals using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Sample data will be analyzed using linear regression analysis from calibration standards. Results from the study may be used to analyze methods of producing wine and evaluating the contamination risk from steps in the wine making process. Removal of potentially harmful chemicals from wine has the ability to lead to an improvement in health in wine drinking countries.
