The multiple redox states and electrochromic nature of viologens have earned them a prominent role in many materials, from catalytic photochemical processes to organic electrochromic materials.  However, the nucleophilic nature of the pyridine nitrogen has placed practical limits on the type of N-aryl substituted viologens that are available.  We describe here the use of hypervalent diaryl-l<sup>3</sup>-iodanes to deliver electron rich aromatic rings in the synthesis of asymmetrical viologens.
