Transition metal complexes containing pincer ligands have set a platform in chemical research due to the roles they play in catalysis and material science. In an effort to develop water-soluble, biocompatible pincer ligand complexes, the synthesis of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) pincer type ligand using the amino acid glycine is described. IR and 1H NMR spectra were obtained, which confirm the formation of the white solid ligand. Additionally, the di-NHC cobalt complex [Co (C7H6N2O4)]-, was synthesized, isolated and characterized using IR and 1HNMR spectroscopies and X-ray crystallography. Future work will focus on the catalytic reactivity of the cobalt complex in aqueous media.
