Imines are a class of organic compounds known to have a variety of biological and medicinal properties. Many show activity for the treatment of bacterial, fungal, and viral infections. Some imines are also known for chemical properties that render them useful in organic light emitting diodes, also known as OLEDs.  OLEDs can be found within many display screens. The goals of this project are to find imines previously synthesized by our group that exhibit electroluminescent properties, improve the synthesis of imines already known from the literature to be electroluminescent, and eventually create new imines that are also electroluminescent. Thus far, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and controlled potential electrolysis (CPE) have been used to examine the electrochemical properties of previously synthesized imines. Some underwent visible color changes as well as differences in their fluorescence properties after CPE but none exhibited reversible oxidation in CV. Because organic chemistry students do not learn about the OLEDs, ideally we hope to create a project that can be implemented within the organic chemistry laboratory setting that allows students to synthesize an imine and then create a simple OLED.
