Bis-azo dyes have a long history in the fabric industry. The first reported synthesis was in the 1850’s. The ability to chelate metals suggests that they may be useful for the detection of metals at trace levels. Our research is focus on finding a robust synthesis for a novel bis-azo dye (BPDMA) using 2,6-dimethylaniline (DMA) and the diazonium salt solution of 2,6-diaminopyridine (DAP). To date no consistent synthetic route has been established that proceeds through the diazonium ion. Three unique products of interest have been synthesized and isolated. Each product has a unique <sup>1</sup>H NMR spectrum, UV-Vis spectrum, IR spectrum, and visible color. All products have a pH and solvent dependent UV-Vis spectrum with the λ<sub>max</sub> being in the ultraviolet range. The characterization is proceeding and likely structures will be presented
