In traditional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the present anode material versus Li/Li+ is graphite, which has a theoretical capacity of 372 mAh. One widely studied substitution for graphite towards the better anode technology is the use of transition metal oxides (MO), in particular α-Fe2O3 with a theoretical capacity of 1005 mAh versus Li/Li+. Nanosized α-Fe2O3 were deposited on stainless steel current collectors through low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) and annealed in an oven to reinforce the chemical bond of nanosized α-Fe2O3 to the stainless steel current collectors. The as-deposited and annealed nanosized α-Fe2O3 was characterized using an X-ray diffraction (XRD) to identify a preferred orientation of (104) and a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) revealed an uniform surface morphology. The electrochemical tests performed were Galvanostatic charge-discharge (Arbin) and cyclic voltammetery (Gamry) in a voltage range of 0.1 – 4.0 V to further investigate the specific capacity with the corresponding coulombic efficiency, and lithium-ion transport upon oxidation/reduction. This study allowed confirmation that a short deposition time via (LPCVD) with additional annealing, rather by oven or LPCVD, still allowed for excellent electrochemical performance in LIBs when used as a substitution for graphite as an improve anode.
