The development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been on the rise in recent years. These rigid three-dimensional networks of metal complexes linked together by organic molecules often lead to porous materials with high surface areas that allow for the diffusion of small molecules. As such, MOFs show great promise for a variety of uses in areas such as: gas storage, separation, and purification, catalysis, chemical filtering, and drug delivery. We are currently investigating the synthesis and reactivity of several functionalized formamidine ligands for use as a scaffolding in the construction of novel metal organic frameworks. To this end, we have prepared the disubstituted formamidine dipyrazinylformamidine (HDpyzF). This ligand possesses pyrazinyl groups on both ends that can potentially coordinate additional metals ions leading to the formation of metal-organic networks. HDpyzF is readily prepared in good yield by condensation of aminopyrazine with triethylorthoformate at elevated temperature. In order to examine some of its coordination properties, we have reacted HDpyzF with the d8 metals Pd2+ and Pt2+. Details regarding the synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, and reactions of HDpyzF with Pd(II) and Pt(II) halides will presented.
