(-)-Promysalin is a natural product produced by <i>Pseudomonas putida</i> RW10S1 for biofilm formation and translocation. Previous studies revealed that the relative and absolute stereochemistry was 2R, 8R, 16S. In addition, promysalin was proven to inhibit growth of <i>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</i> and inhibit pyoverdine production. Current studies focus on synthesizing various analogs to observe how structural modifications of promysalin increase or decrease its inhibitory activity. If functional groups that have the ability to participate in hydrogen bonding are translocated throughout the molecule, then important conclusions about structure-activity relationships will be determined. Approximately 15 analogs have been synthesized to probe how interactions such as hydrogen bonding play a role in biochemical activity. By identifying these structural influences, new avenues of treatment against pathogenic bacteria can be explored.
