From textbooks to novel research, nonlinear models are pervasive in biochemistry. To be fully prepared to engage in post-baccalaureate work or education, undergraduate students need to understand the basis of modeling biochemical processes to extract useful analytical or comparative parameters. An example of an upper-division undergraduate biochemistry course that contains a developmental structure of nonlinear modeling skills of student-collected, laboratory data will be presented. Straightforward connections will be made between (<i>i</i>) topics regularly found in biochemistry courses [i.e., amino acid chemical properties, protein purification, DNA manipulation, ligand binding, and enzyme kinetics] and (<i>ii</i>) the lab activities on these common topics that develop students’ abilities to both draw evidence-based conclusions from and assess the fitness of nonlinear computational models.
