<br/>Antibiotics are widely used to cure bacterial infections but are becoming ineffective due to the development of bacterial resistance. New antibiotics need to be developed to combat this problem. Teixobactin is a newly discovered resistance-evading antibiotic that is effective against many different disease-causing bacteria. The cyclic portion of teixobactin is hypothesized to be biologically active against bacteria. Different pathways were used in an attempt to synthesize this portion of teixobactin. Solid phase peptide synthesis techniques were ultimately used to successfully make a peptide chain that was then closed into the cyclic form. The synthesis of the cyclic peptide was the culmination of nine chemical steps that include four deprotections, three couplings, cleavage of the peptide from the resin, and a macrolactonization. The cyclic peptide contains an alkene side chain that will be converted into a heterocyclic ring to complete the synthesis.
