The American Chemical Society Student Chapter of the University of Puerto Rico at Aguadilla aims to lead in green chemistry education both in our campus and the community. Lack of knowledge and the inability to incorporate green chemistry in our daily lives is a big issue that affects the way we view our responsibility to sustain the environment. It’s our mission to disclose the green philosophy in order to fulfill this need. We have always been distinguished for our newspaper “La Idea Química”. Our publication focuses on the communication of the 12 Green Chemistry Principles. Also, this year we published in english to expand our frontiers of communication, distributing the newspaper in the ACS Puerto Rico Section. Our commitment to promote this subject is evidenced with the chapter’s Scavenger Hunt. This recreational activity is an example of the different ways we foment a sustainable future. This year we designed it as an inter-chapter activity to promote the interaction of ACS members in Puerto Rico. Also, we distributed reusable bottles to help diminish the use of plastic in our Campus. More than just promoting the message of green chemistry, we want to develop an example of how to implement it in the laboratory. To improve the Organic Chemistry curriculum oriented to the green chemistry principles, we modified a laboratory experiment, by substituting the quantity and type of solvent in the extraction. The green chemistry culture created in our members prepares them to be part of the planet's environmental solutions.
