The transition between the low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) states of 3d metal ions, or spin crossover (SCO), most commonly occurs in complexes with d6 electronic configuration. In nearly all known examples of Fe(II) SCO complexes, the metal center resides in an octahedral coordination environment of six nitrogen atoms. Therefore, a recent report of SCO in an Fe(II) complex with N4S2 coordination stands out as a rather odd case. In this contribution, we attempt to establish how common the SCO behavior can be in such coordination environment by studying a range of Fe(II) complexes with tetradentate N2S2-binding ligands and ancillary bidentate or two monodetate N-binding ligands.
