The decomposition of formic acid to H2 and CO2 is catalyzed by complexes formed from RuCl3 and triphenylphosphines as catalyst precursors in an emulsion. Mononuclear carbonyls such as [Ru(HCO2)2(CO)2(PPh3)2] (1), [Ru(CO)3(PPh3)2] (2) and a binuclear carbonyl [Ru2(HCO2)2(CO)4(PPh3)2] (3), and a large cluster - encompassing twelve Ru atoms - were isolated from the reaction mixtures and structurally characterized. The activity of catalysts formed from ortho- and para-substituted triphenylphosphines, triphenylphosphonium bromide and triphenylphosphine oxide and RuCl3 were also studied for the dehydrogenation of FA in emulsion. Experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of surfactants on the reaction rate.
