Fluorophores are becoming attractive to visualize cellular activity. They are used as molecular probes and biological markers to track cellular events such as cell division. A recent characterized dipyrrinone derivative, xanthoglow, displays favorable fluorophore potential as a biological tool. One useful property of xanthoglow fluorophores is the lack of a fixed charge which allows them to diffuse freely through cellular membranes. On the other hand, the previous described xanthoglow fluorophores are a bit energetic for cells as they absorb light at 440 nm and emit at 530 nm and cause damage. In an effort to shift xanthoglows to a less energetic state, we have developed two syntheses of two novel bromoxanthoglow scaffolds that can be easily modified. A bromine handle was installed to facilitate insertion of various groups that extend pi-bond conjugation through cross coupling reactions. This poster illustrates the two synthetic routes of the two bromoxanthoglows and reactions used to generate a novel library of xanthoglow fluorophores. Some of the significant reactions include: Barton-Zard reaction, Vilsmeier-Haack reaction, Hartwig-Bachwald coupling reaction, and Suzuki coupling reactions.
