Methods of synthesizing cyclobutyl systems were explored. A reaction between vinyltrimethylsilane and trichloroacetyl chloride to make 3-(trimethylsilyl)cyclobutanone using a zinc-copper couple was optimized by varying the ratio of zinc to copper. Similar reactions were attempted using dichloroacetyl chloride and vinyltrimethylsilane with triethylamine, as well as triphenylphosphine oxide as a sequestering agent for the zinc chloride biproduct. Additional attempts were made to generate four membered rings using Claisen type condensations with diethyl glutarate.
