Phenyldimethylsilyl and trimethylsilyl groups are effective electron-donors for facilitating bridging and the synthesis of trifluoromethylbiyclobutane. We are currently invesitgating effects of steric bulk on both the γ-electron-donating and the α-electron-withdrawing substituents. The system that was prepared contains a γ-triethylsilyl and an α-CF<sub>3</sub> group. The compound was solvolyzed with TFE, ethanol-d6 and HFIP to measure the effect of steric bulk on the extent of silyl bridging by comparing the relative yields of bicyclobutanes and substitution products.
