The main focus of the UTPB ACS Student Chapter is community outreach; engaging the public through activities that promote chemistry benefits the field as a whole by fostering an interest in scientific endeavours. The chapter also maintains a positive and visible presence on campus through active participation in university sponsored events such as the Halloween Carnival and Falcon Days. One of the most important community outreach activities the chapter engages in is the volunteering of time and energy at the regional science fair as judges for primary and secondary school science projects. The chapter also has an active demonstration team that volunteers in primary schools throughout the Permian Basin. Bringing chemistry demonstrations to primary school children nurtures the idea that careers in science are accessible to everyone; these demos also provide a great opportunity to emphasize the importance of safety when dealing with science. Overall, the UTPB ACS Student Chapter’s main purpose is to promote the field of chemistry in the Permian Basin community, on and off campus.
