The series of complexes featuring [2,2’-bipyridine]-6,6’-dicarboxylic acid (bda) developed by Licheng Sun’s research group represent one current benchmark for molecular water oxidation catalysts in terms of longevity and catalytic activity. Elaboration of bda by incorporating more strongly-donating carbon-based ligands promise altered redox potentials of proposed catalytic intermediates, and potentially more rapid formation of dioxygen and increased catalyst stability. Thus, the synthesis, structural characterization, and electrochemical studies of ruthenium complexes containing C- and N-donors will be discussed.
