Modified nucleosides have garnered increased attention over the last decade, in part because of the variety of areas in which they have seen application. In particular, 5-substituted 2’-deoxyuridines have been investigated for their anticancer, antiviral and antibacterial activities. The cellular uptake of these nucleosides has yet to be fully investigated. This project will utilize mild Suzuki cross-coupling conditions in order to attach various aryl groups to the 5-position of the uridine core, creating a library of fluorescent modified nucleosides. The photophysical properties of these nucleosides will be accessed and later their cellular uptake in order to determine the effect of modification on cellular uptake.
