Materials have been made to capture trace small molecule organics from real water sources as well as aqueous waste streams. By modifying silica-based materials with supramolecular hosts we have provided a surface capable of targeting small organic molecules by forming inclusion complexes. A variety of model organic compounds were chosen as targets, but it is likely that these materials will be capable of capturing a variety of relatively hydrophobic molecules from water sources. The performance of these materials has been compared to a simple hydrophobic surface as well as the base substrate. An advantage of using non-covalent interactions to capture the target contaminants is the regeneration abilities of our materials.
