This presentation describes the synthesis and reactivity of NiII(CFnH3-n)(Ar) complexes relevant to nickel-catalyzed aromatic trifluoromethylation and difluoromethylation reactions. The reactivity of these complexes to thermolysis and oxidation is investigated in detail. We demonstrate that, depending on the nature of the supporting ligands, CFnH3-n, and reaction conditions, reductive elimination can occur from the NiII, NiIII or NiIV oxidation state. These studies have broader implications on strategies for the development of new Ni-catalyzed aromatic fluoroalkylation methods.
