The overlap of chemistry and other disciplines continues to grow, thereby solidifying chemistry’s role as the central science.  A modern undergraduate chemistry curriculum must recognize interdisciplinarity and train students to accept the future challenges required of scientific professionals.  Toxicology is one such interdisciplinary field of study that most undergraduate students do not experience within traditional undergraduate chemistry programs.  At South Dakota State University, the rudimentary principles of toxicology are introduced in the first organic chemistry course for departmental majors and emphasized throughout the two-semester course sequence.  To provide hands-on experience with toxicological techniques, a laboratory experiment centered on vitamin toxicity was devised.  Pre/Post-instruction surveys that measured students attitudes toward and knowledge of chemical safety, environmental hazards, and toxicological principles was also administered.  This presentation will detail the laboratory exercise and the impacts of formal training in toxicology on students’ attitudes and opinions.
