The Midland College Student ACS Chapter participated in a variety of service, educational, and community outreach activities during 2015. In October, we celebrated National Chemistry Week by reaching out to the local community through performing demonstrations and hands on activities, at the Midland Park Mall. Advertising for the event was coordinated through the Midland College Public Relations Dept. and the event was covered by 2 local television stations. Also, a group from the Midland College Chemistry Club held a demonstration at a local elementary school to get young minds excited about chemistry. A first grade class was able to participate and observe some simple chemical reactions including making a gooey play-doh, and take home postcard shaving cream-color art. The six and seven year olds learned about mixing solutions, and safety while experimenting, all while having fun. We also participated in "Si, MC", an on campus event geared toward recruiting first-generation Latino students, visited local elementary schools, and helped conduct Science Extravaganza, a MC event for local 6th graders, performing demonstrations at each, and providing information regarding chemistry at MC. Dr. Pat Nandakumar, Faculty Advisor of MC Chemistry Club, represented the club at a fund-raiser for the local Petroleum Museum and presented a green chemistry talk at the Eco-Fair in San Angelo, TX. The Club organized and attended a trip to Performance Chemicals in Odessa, TX to observe industrial chemical processes and develop ties to local chemical businesses. Through various fundraisers, the Chemistry Club was able to take a group of members to the National ACS Meeting in Denver, CO, where one member presented original research at the Conference. In November, the club acted as ambassadors and provided logistical support for the West Texas STEM Conference, a regional conference for undergraduate research. A series of presentations on rare earth elements, ore deposits, and short webinars on various interesting topics are planned for the year around meetings.
