Colloidal dispersions of C60 fullerene were prepared by adding polar solvents to solutions of alkanes and non-polar aromatic solvents. The formation of C60 aggregates was studied by using UV-VIS spectroscopy. Saturated solutions of straight chain alkane solvents from pentane to dodecane, cyclohexane, cyclohexene, and decalin were obtained. A variety of polar solvents were then added to create mixed solvent solutions. Some peaks in the UV-VIS spectra are known to be sensitive to solvent interactions and the shifting of these peaks was noted. This shifting was interpreted as being due to the formation of aggregates. The results were also compared to those obtained for C60 fullerene solutions in vegetable oils to see if having a molecule possessing polar and nonpolar regions would yeld a result similar to a mixture of polar and nonpolar solvents.
