Flow Chemistry is a field of chemistry that has major implications in the industrial setting, as using flow Chemistry instead of batch Chemistry at a production level has the potential to increase the rate of reactivity, as well as increase the yield of the reactions. Knowledge of flow Chemistry theory and techniques is crucial to any undergraduate student planning to go into Chemical Engineering or industrial Chemistry.  Unfortunately, many institutions neglect to discuss this subject in their curriculum, which could be due to the inherent cost of the equipment.  Because of this, research has been done towards developing an inexpensive, convenient, and easily-accessible set up that universities can implement in their laboratories.       Syringe pumps are commonly used in laboratory scale experiments, and are one of the less expensive choices to consider when interested in flow Chemistry.  For smaller universities or colleges, however, they may still be too expensive to purchase.  Glassware and compressed gasses are far less expensive, and all universities have access to them, so methods of flow chemistry testing using only these materials (bypassing the need for pumps) would be ideal for any institution interested in flow chemistry.  This research first used syringe pumps as a method to which other novel testing methods are compared to.  Synthesis reactions, such as substitution, were first run using the syringe pump, then mimicked using the novel apparatus that was designed in this project.
