The performance of geologic CO2 sequestration, CO2–enhanced oil recovery, and CO2 fracturing can be affected by mineral dissolution induced by injected CO2. Interfacial interactions between cations and mineral surfaces can strongly affect mineral dissolution rates. This work investigated effects of up to 4 M NaCl, 1 M CaCl2, and 200 µM Al3+ on plagioclase dissolution at 35–90 oC and 100 atm CO2, conditions closely relevant to subsurface CO2 injection. For the first time, we observed inhibition effects of Al3+ on anorthite dissolution in far-from-equilibrium system, and Al3+ effects were enhanced at elevated temperature. Interestingly, Na+ was found to inhibit anorthite dissolution, and the effects of Na+ were 50% stronger at 35oC than at 60 oC. Ca2+ had similar effects as Na+, but Ca2+ effects did not suppress Na+ effects when they coexisted.
