Substituted amines and imines are key functional groups in a variety of applications, ranging from drug discovery to materials research. While there are many versatile reactions that use imine electrophiles to create highly functionalized amines, there are few effective ‘umpolung’ reactions for these functional groups in which imines or imine precursors can act as effective nucleophiles. Such reactions would be valuable synthetic tools.<br/>In this study, we describe our exploration of new strategies for catalytically generating imine derivatives that act as nucleophiles. In particular, this presentation will address steps taken towards obtaining proof of concept via an intramolecular reaction, and our strategy to tune the reactivity of both the catalyst and substrate in order to obtain a functional catalytic cycle.<br/>
