Photoinduced ligand exchange, excited state charge transfer, photoisomerization, and sensitization of 1O2 production represent important reactions initiated by light with potential applications that include photochemotherapy (PCT) and solar energy conversion. The photorelease of enzyme inhibitors and drugs will be presented, along with strategies to improve the efficiency of ligand dissociation. The incorporation of appropriate antibodies for selective tumor targeting and dual-reactivity will be discussed. These systems, together with bimetallic Ru2 complexes, represent a new class of potential PCT agents because their mode of action differs significantly from those currently in use, which rely solely on the production of reactive oxygen species. The use of dirhodium complexes for the production of H2 from acid solutions will be presented, together with electronic absorption, time-resolved measurements, and electrochemistry to gain better understanding of the mechanism of the reaction. The application of these complexes to problems in solar energy conversion for the catalytic production of H2 and reduction of CO2 will be discussed.
