Peroxide dianion , O22-, is an entity which has eluded study in organic media due to the insolubility of conventional salts of this anion. Through encapsulation with a supramolecular anion-receptor cryptate, peroxide dianion can be coaxed into aprotic media and its spectroscopic properties, along with reactivity can be explored in great detail. Studies have been carried out to elucidate the properties of peroxide dianion cryptate, with particular emphasis on understanding crucial structural features required to both solubilize and stabilize peroxide dianion in polar aprotic media. In addition, we have found that encapsulated peroxide dianion reacts rapidly with both CO and CO2 to yield encapsulated carbonate, also recognized by the anion receptor. These observations provide insight into the behavior of peroxide present in solid metal oxide catalysts as well as lithium air batteries.
