CO2 capture and utilization has been the focus nowadays as an effort to lessen the effect of global warming. CO2 is an abundant resource and can be converted to a number of useful chemicals, allowing not only minimizing the amount of CO2 emission but also adding the economic and environmental values to CO2-based processes. Methanol and Dimethyl Ether (DME) are the focus in this study. Methanol is an important intermediate for various industries such as dimethyl ether, formaldehyde, MTBE, acetic acid, etc., whereas DME is a potential clean fuel for diesel engine with high cetane number, clean-burning, and non-toxic emission. Aspen Plus Ò has been used to model the process throughout this study. In the methanol production, a two-step reaction consisting of a bi-reforming process and methanol synthesis has been modeled to convert CO2 and methane as reactants to produce syngas as intermediate and finally converting to methanol using hydrogenation. The bi-reforming process has demonstrated the feasibility in terms of technical and economic aspects. In the DME production, the integrated dry reforming of CO2 with direct DME synthesis process has a potential to give the highest CO2 consumption. Finally, all process routes are compared and justified by the CO2 consumption, economic viability as well as other sustainability indicators.
