The effect of the addition of a salt compound, as an additive, on the glass transition temperature Tg is investigated using a commercially available poly(methyl methacrylate). It is found that Tg apparently shifts to high temperature by the addition of the salt; i.e., Tg enhancement is confirmed. The electrostatic interaction between PMMA and the salt will be responsible for the phenomenon. Furthermore, the oscillatory shear modulus beyond Tg reveals that no specific relaxation mode appears in the low frequency region, suggesting that no network structure is formed in the molten state.
