Interactions between polymer bearing surfaces is at the core of many phenomena that critically influence technology. In this talk I will present a new method to explore such interactions at the microscale that is amenable for high throughput measurements. The basic concept is based on the coupling between rotation and translation of a sphere in the presence of an interface. In particular, low friction environments correspond to slip behavior while rolling behavior corresponds to high friction situations or even adhesion. Using a combination of computer modeling and experimental results based on quantifying the coupling we are able to obtain microscopic information on the interaction between both surface as well as the dynamics of slipping. To finalize I will present my perspective on such technology.
