Compact and lightweight portable fuel cell systems have been developed and commercialized by UltraCell for years. These systems have undergone extensive military specification qualification tests and field trials. They have been used to power radio and satellite communication gears, remote or mobile surveillance systems, and laptop computers. The core of the system consists of a methanol steam reformer and a fuel cell stack. The stack is built using polybenzimidazole-based membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). The utilization of these high temperature MEAs simplifies the system design, and reduces the size and weight of the fuel cell system.  In this presentation, the fuel cell stack development, system integration, and application will be discussed.
