Recent changes to EPA regulations have inspired an increase in the need for energy from low carbon emission sources. Nuclear energy, while providing a pathway for high yielding and low emission energy, continues to receive bad press, as it is accompanied by the threat of radioactive waste contamination or release. A major component of nuclear contamination is the uranium (VI) ion uranyl (UO22+), which is the most common oxidation state found in the environment. Efficient remediation of waste begins with detecting and identifying contaminated areas. Molecular recognition of uranyl through the use of a selective chemosensor has proven difficult due to the lack of actinide research. The salphenazine class of chemosensors has been shown to have a distinguishable signal for uranyl, while also binding common transition metals. Further analysis of these compounds provides insight into a scaffold of interest for the chemosensing of uranyl. Here, the analysis of the π-π stacking and higher order dimensional crystal packing in the solid-state characterization of salphenazine and a series of M[salphenazine] complexes, M= VO(IV), Fe(III), Cu(II), Zn(II) and UO2(VI) is reported.
