It has been determined that ionic liquids start to enter the continuous non-polar domain with alkyl appendages of 8 carbons or more. In order to utilize ionic liquids across the entire polarity range, novel lipidic ionic liquids were synthesized with long alkyl appendages to overcome the polarity of controversial ionic liquids. In this context, a complimentary class of lipidic ionic liquids derived from 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole (or methomazole) were developed via the S-alkylation of methimazole ring through thione. The synthesized ionic liquids contain saturated/unsaturated C16, C18 and C20 side chains and relatively low melting points. The synthetic methodology will be discussed, as well as the impact of these structural modifications upon ionic liquids’ melting points and computational insights into their basis.
