Nitric oxide has profound biological and pathological implications. The nitric oxide donating compounds are actively sought-after due to their potentials as an exogenous source of NO or as a pharmacological agent. An ideal NO donor is expected to be able to release NO with a high degree of spatiotemporal controll. In addition, the kinetics and dose of NO release should be readily available to facilitate eluciation of the involvement of NO in a biological response. We have developed a photo-triggered NO donor with a comcomitant release of a fluorophore whose emission may be harnessed as a convenient measure of the kinetics/dose of NO release. This NO donor can also to derivazed to become a peroxynitrite donor. <br/><br/>We note that this abstract is submitted upon invitation of Prof. Huiwang Ai, the co-chair of the symposium titled "Luminescent proteins, dyes, and sensors” (Co-chaired by me and Prof. Robin McCarley at Louisiana State University).
