This presentation will cover a series of technical challenges and discovery in an industrial setting. These include improved materials brought to commercialization in high performance applications/markets. These innovations include films and coatings used in optically demanding LCD displays for precise light management for improved image, a new liquid crystalline polymer used in the thermally and dimension stability challenging application of integrated circuit chip injection molded mounts and new to the world polymer used in food-ware and baby bottles requiring clarity, boiling water thermal resistance and dishwasher durability without the use of BPA. These innovations required teamwork of many people skilled in organic chemistry, chemical engineering, material science and application/market knowledge. This talk will tell the story of these innovations by giving examples of molecular level understanding of the chemistry and engineering challenges that had to be overcome to bring these improvements in the molecules and their performance in everyday uses. These stories of successful commercial discovery and material development will illustrate how the combination of many disciplines, noted above, when systematically applied to needs in the marketplace result in, not only commercial success, but growth in our chemical and structure/property understanding. On a more personal level, this talk will include some of the personal challenges and growth in industrial chemical understanding that the author experienced in working on this series of process and product innovations that have been brought to commercial reality and are the basis for his receiving the 2016 ACS National award for Industrial Chemistry.
