Hydroamination is an atom economical process by which an N-H bond is added across a C-C multiple bond. Our laboratory studies the intramolecular hydroamination of aminoallenes using early transition metal amide-alkoxide catalysts. The products of this class of reactions, in this case tetrahydropyridines, have numerous potential applications, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry. The mechanism by which the reaction proceeds is dependent on the catalyst and substrate used, but little mechanistic work has been done for the tantalum catalyzed reaction. We monitor the reactions by <sup>1</sup>H NMR spectroscopy and measure the enantiomeric excess at regular intervals via chiral GC-MS. We will present mechanistic studies of the tantalum catalyzed reaction, comparing them to previous work by Bergman on the titanium catalyzed reaction.
