Mast cells are most often implicated in allergic inflammation processes caused by attachment of IgE receptors and then subsequent antigen binding. In addition to allergic inflammation, mast cells play key roles in other inflammatory processes, including neurogenic inflammation. Conflicting results are found in the literature as to whether mast cells are activated by the most common inflammation-related neuropeptides, substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide. This research uses electrochemistry on a single and bulk cell level to characterize the mechanism of release from mast cells induced by these neuropeptides and compares them to the traditional allergic IgE reaction route. In addition, these data reveal the role IgE may have played in the conflicting results found in literature
