Drinking water disinfection has substantially decreased the prevalence of waterborne diseases. However, the chemicals used in current disinfection methods, including chlorine and monochloramine, react with naturally occurring components of water and produce disinfection by-products (DBPs). A number of the halogenated DBPs have been shown to be cytotoxic. An alternate disinfectant that may be used in place of current treatments is higher-valent tetraoxy iron(VI) (Fe<sup>VI</sup>O4<sup>2-</sup>, Fe(VI) or ferrate). Fe(VI) is an effective disinfectant over a wide pH range, and produces non-toxic Fe(III) as its final product. However, there is a lack of data regarding the formation of DBPs during disinfection of water with ferrate. This poster will examine the formation of DBPs in simulated drinking water that has been disinfected with ferrate, chlorine or monochloramine. The cytotoxicity of the DBPs from each disinfection treatment will be discussed.
