Recently, much attention has been paid to transition metal-catalyzed α-alkylation of ketones with alcohols as green alkylating agents instead of alkyl halides for the preparation of α-alkylated ketones based on “hydrogen autotransfer process.” From the standpoint of sustainable chemistry, the development of new strategies for the synthesis of α-alkylated ketones from other chemical feedstocks instead of ketones as starting reagents would be significant. Herein, we wish to describe the efficient synthesis of α-alkylated ketones via one-pot sequential reactions from alkynes or secondary alcohols as starting materials. In the presence of catalyst(s), alkynes or secondary alcohols are first converted to methyl ketones, then the resulting methyl ketones are further α-alkylated with alcohols to give α-alkylated ketones.
