We demonstrated that the combination of terephthalate (TP) with glutarate (Glut) and neodymium(III)-ions under hydrothermal conditions leads to an open framework of formula Nd2(Glut)2(TP)(H2O)417H2O with quite spacious interstities. A derivative of this compound can also be synthesized via integration of TP and 2-aminoterephthalate (TPNH2) resulting in a mixture of TP and TPNH2. This introduces a functional group into the lattice, without altering the structural properties of this coordination polymer whatsoever (Nd2(Glut)2(TP)x(TPNH2)y(H2O)417H2O, with y= 1-x). We further succeeded in synthesizing the pure Nd2(Glut)2(TPNH2)(H2O)417H2O analog. Our previous investigation considered extended series of lanthanide coordination polymers, for instance the lanthanide 2-niroterephthalates, Ln2(TPNO2)3(H2O)22H2O (Ln = Pr - Lu, except Pm). Attempts to create one of the above-described compounds under hydrothermal conditions with any different lanthanide element failed. We began with the creation of an extended series at room temperature by obtaining crystalline materials through slow diffusion. This approach enabled us to extend these open frameworks onto the lanthanide elements Pr, Ce, Sm, and La in their trivalent states, resulting in identical structures. We were also able to synthesize and structurally characterize uranyl-compounds that incorporate one of these ligands at a time, using the same slow diffusion room temperature approach. While the lanthanide structures form three-dimensional (3D) coordination polymers, the uranyl compounds assemble either as one-dimensional intermeshed chains ([UO2](TP)(H2O)22THF), two dimensional intermeshed sheets ([UO2](TPNH2)(H2O)22H2O), or 3D-lattices Na2[UO2]2(Glut)38H2O.
