Nanoscale semiconductor materials have attracted intense interest due to their shape- and size-dependent physical and chemical properties. Accordingly, the synthetic strategies used to generate semiconductor nanocrystals must offer precise control over particle size and morphology, while generating uniform size distributions. This work focuses on expanding the toolbox of available synthetic and post-synthetic modification strategies for colloidal semiconductor nanoparticles, highlighting a hot-injection approach used to produce tetrapod-shaped ZnO nanocrystals. This robust solution-phase synthetic protocol can be modified to generate highly crystalline, size-tunable ZnO tetrapods that display intense ultraviolet photoluminescence emission. Furthermore, these particles were utilized to demonstrate the utility of total material transformation motifs to produce different materials with retention of the tetrapod morphology.
