Molecular binding behavior to DNA has been a topic of continuing interest in the field of medicinal chemistry. Bi-dentate N, N chelating agent such as 2, 2′-dipyridyl containing core structure is such a class of chelating agent which exhibit interesting properties. In addition, 2, 2′-dipyridyl moiety has been used as a precursor to synthesize numerous mixed-ligand complexes, and their extensive usefulness are prominent in varied areas including molecular recognition, antineoplastic agents, and nucleic acid probes. Another distinct property, the triplet state photosynthesitizing character that is mostly found in the metal complexes of dipyridyl nucleus. On the other hand, organic compounds containing oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen atoms have received much attention by reason of their significant pharmacological importance such as anticancer, antibacterial, antitumor properties. Hence, 2, 2’-dipyridyl moiety is found to be used as an interesting precursor in the synthesis of numerous multifunctional derivatives. Our current project focuses on synthesis of Schiff bases with nitrogen and sulfur containing amine by using aldehyde as a synthon derived from 6, 6′-dimethyl 2, 2′-dipyridyl. Also, antibacterial and anticancer study of newly synthesized Schiff bases and their corresponding metal complexes as well as other catalyst-assisted-derivatives of 6, 6′-dimethyl 2, 2′-dipyridyl are to be carried out to investigate their biological importance. Therefore, our project involved synthesis of numerous derivatives of 6, 6′-dimethyl 2, 2′-dipyridyl aldehydes and ketones containing both ‘hard’ nitrogen and ‘soft’ sulfur donor atoms followed by preparation of their Schiff bases and corresponding metal complexes.
