The rapid pace of drug discovery and the resulting depth of biopharmaceutical pipelines drive the critical need for higher performance, lower cost manufacturing processes.  At 3M, we have been engaged in the design of new materials in an effort to provide an integrated approach to dramatically simplify downstream purification processes through the development of single-use, advanced chromatography solutions.  New ligand chemistry designs and membrane modification techniques have allowed us to develop membrane media with very high capacities for protein capture. <br/>The main objective of the current work has been to develop a library of mixed-mode functional monomers and to investigate their applicability as ligands for the modification of bioprocessing membranes.  This presentation will summarize our efforts in the synthesis of multifunctional monomers, utilization of these monomers for the preparation of functional membranes, and evaluation of the membranes by a variety of techniques, including high throughput experimentation.  In particular, application to the flow through removal of aggregates will be highlighted.<br/><br/>
