It is well known that surface ligands enhance the photoluminescence stability of quantum dots, but exact reason is still not clear. Herein, we study the effect of ligand concentration and defects on the surface of quantum dots. Our results show that surface passivation of PbSe quantum dot by PbCl<sub>2</sub> ligands, attached to 110 site, favors the formation of two dimensional nanoplates growing along {100} facet over three dimensional aggregates as shown in fig 1. In another result, we showed that interaction between silicon quantum dots with and without defects increased the photoluminescence stability through rapid exciton energy transfer from optically active (bright) states of a quantum dot to a surface trap state of its neighboring defective quantum dot as shown in fig 2.
