Generally, supported catalysts are prepared in a multi-step process: (1) synthesis of the support, (2) physical or chemical activation of the product, (3) deposition of the active component by incipient wetness impregnation (IWI), ion-exchange, or chemical vapor deposition, and (4) thermal treatment transforming the precursor into the active phase. This process is usually non-continuous and the distribution of the active phase is frequently compromised during the high temperature steps, especially when high loadings are targeted. In contrast to these traditional methods, we introduce the use of metal organic frameworks as hard templates for the direct synthesis of carbon-metal nanoparticle composites. In metal organic frameworks the various constituting elements are present in a highly dispersed form, an ideal starting point for catalyst synthesis. By controlled addition of structural components or promotors followed by thermal transformation new catalytic materials are produced. These catalysts displaying thrilling catalytic properties and unrivalled stability in different conversions involving C1 molecules, from high- and low temperature Fischer-Tropsch and methanol synthesis to the electro-reduction of CO2 [1].
