Currently industrially-viable hard magnetic materials are synthesized by high-volume solid state methods. While such procedures have obvious advantages in scalability, they de-emphasize the importance of a detailed molecular understanding of the single-domain magnetic structure. Focusing on the isolation of single-domain, high surface area fct FePt, enhancements to a range of magnetic properties can be induced through subtle chemical manipulation of the surface, morphology, and size, without convolutions from post-preparative treatment and interparticle interactions. Following these synthetic alterations, the single-domain species can be further modified to enhance low-temperature interparticle coupling and build dense, strongly magnetic bulk materials.
