(+)-Abscisic acid (ABA) is a natural plant hormone that is found in virtually all plants. The ability to enhance or diminish the effects of ABA in crop plants—by, for example, the exogenous application of ABA analogs—could have useful implications for the agricultural industry. To this end, we are synthesizing a series of spiro-functionalized ABA analogs that we have designed to be potent, metabolically stable ABA receptor agonists, as well as one potential ABA receptor antagonist. We propose a common synthetic strategy for accessing these ABA analogs, which involves the skeletal rearrangement of the abundant chiral pool compound (–)-carvone into a uniquely functionalized cyclohexenone core.
