A variety of transition metal complexes of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are known.1 Many of them possess interesting biological properties. Organometallic complexes of NSAIDs are rare. We have synthesized a series of organorhenium (polypyridyl) complexes of naproxen from the reactions of the corresponding pentylcarbonato complexes with naproxen. A few of them have been characterized through X-ray crystallography. The UV titrations of these complexes at pH 7.2 with CT DNA suggest that the complexes bind to DNA intercallatively. Surprisingly, the naproxenato complexes are less active than the corresponding pentylcarbonato complexes on U937 lymphoma cell lines. A comparison of the cytotoxic properties of naproxen, pentylcarbonato complexes, and the corresponding naproxenato complexes against U937 lymphoma cells will be presented. 1.
